Virgin Media network performance

I had been having on/off issues with my Virgin Media cable internet connection for a little while with apparently random dropouts of connection that could only be fixed by power cycling the modem.

Clearly not an ideal solution when I like to access my machine(s) when away from home so I thought I'd try replacing my router on the off chance it wasn't actually a problem with Virgin.

Also recently had a flyer advertising they were moving everyone on 2Mbps packages up to a 10Mbps connection. No sign of that happening when the flyer arrived.

That was at the start of June 2009...

Mid June 2011
Repeated failures of the cable internet connection. It would connect, then lose connection after a minute or two. Release/renew IP address cycle sometimes helps but quickly loses connection again.
Couple of days like this so far.
7th-10th Jan 2010
Complete failure of connection for several days. Seems my IP lease had run out. Router log showed unable to find DHCP daemon at Virgin to get a new IP. Tried repeatedly over the few days to get connected with number of modem/router reboots/power cycles.
22nd July 2009
It's been a couple of weeks since last disconnect. Today it was during the afternoon. Had to reboot modem twice before getting a decent connection.
4th July 2009

18:50 ish, connection dropped. Modem reboot required.

29th June 2009
07:45 Unable to get access to home machine from away - looks like connection has dropped again.
 28th June 2009
Computer unable to connect when fired up. Router can't re initialise connection. Modem reboot sorts it.
18:30 - connection drops again during use, requiring modem reboot.
27th June 2009
Early evening, connection dropped out. Modem reboot required to reconnect.
21st June 2009
Router/modem had lost it's connection. Modem rebooted and connection restored, so confident it's an issue with Virgin systems/modem rather than the router.

Speedtest shows my download speed now up to 9.5Mbps :) Quick change after clicking the link in Virgin Media customer centre. Lost connection for an hour , presumably that was the time things were changing.

19th June 09
Logged in to Virgin Media customer portal and found a button to claim my free upgrade to 10Mbps. I wonder how many other customers will stay on 2Mbps because they haven't found that link. Maybe it was just me being dumb, but I only found it when I went looking to see why I wasn't getting the 10Mbps the flyer promised a couple of weeks ago.

18th June 09
10:58pm- http://www.speedtest.net reports speed of 2.05Mbps + ping of 31.

17th June 09
Unable to connect, router reports connected but unable to secure IP address/DNS info. Virgin DHCP server down? Stops me getting a fix out to one of my live websites :(
