How to: Fit Autoleads PC99-X26 in a 206After trying to help someone fit their 206 audio stalk decoder, it may be worth noting:
- The colours of some leads may differ from this page
- Autoleads car year classification is not set in concrete, and should only be used as a guide when trying to work out which cable you need.
Background on my 206 / Audio equipmentHaving bought a 2000 (X reg) 206 in May (09) and fitting my Sony stereo I discovered it should be possible to use the control stalk on the steering column to control my stereo.
Sounded brilliant on the face of things, but it wasn't quite as easy to fit as I expected. I had made some assumptions about fitting of the autoleads harness and control stalk adaptor that weren't quite right. As I couldn't find a single decent guide to fitting the Autoleads PC990X26 to my 206 I thought I'd share some of the info I picked up while fighting with mine.
Note I have an X reg (2000) 206, a Sony stereo and used an Autoleads PC99-X26 adapator.
Your car/stereo may have slightly different requirements when it comes to choosing which adaptor and which patch lead.
I bought my adaptors/wires from this guy:
Installing the Sony stereoFirst up, we need a wiring harness (aka loom) and a control stalk stalk adaptor.
By adaptor I mean the PC99-X26 device and the leads that came with it, the harness fits to the wiring of the car and converts it to a standard (ISO) fitting for connecting to the stereo.
At first the stereo would forget it's settings everytime I turned off the ignition, turns out I needed to switch over the yellow leads in the harness. I later discovered the stereo has a couple of inline plugs in it's wire that would have enable a quick swap over without the need to cut wire - of course I only realised that after cutting wires!
Fitting the PC99-X26 control stalk adaptorThe harness (1 & 3) was not a regular one, it is one that had an additional 2 leads coming off it seperately from the main plugs. These 2 wires would provide power to the PC99-X26 decoder unit (2).
Then there is a long lead (2) that plugs into the adaptor and into a socket in the car wiring elsewhere, originally I had assumed the 2 wire power lead was the only input required into the decoder and so there was much gnashing of teeth as nothing worked.
This long lead, I discovered, plugs into the decoder at one end and then into the car under the steering column, near the fuses. I threaded this through some space in the dashboard so it remains pretty (as pretty as a 206 ever will be ;) ).
So now I have:
- Harness to adapt the car wiring to ISO fit plug (1 & 3) and power supply for the control stalk decoder unit
- 2 wire lead connected from the harness to the PC99-X26 Autoleads decoder unit (2)
- Long cable (2) from the decoder unit to the control stalk plug which lives under the steering column
In the image to the right is from under the steering column after removing the cover:
- Socket where control stalk was plugged in originally
- Cable from control stalk now plugged into socket linked to decoder behind stero
Still not quite finished(!). At this point we have the decoder powered and connected to the car, but not yet to the stereo.
Each brand of stereo has a different fitting for it's remote control input. Mine is a Sony so I needed to find the appropriate patch lead to connect from the decoder to the stereo.
Enabling the Peugeot 206 control stalkI then had to follow the Sony procedure for installing a remote stalk (check your stereo manual):
- Power off stereo.
- Autotune a radio station
- Store the station in memory
- Turn off ignition
- Plug in remote (patch lead from decoder) to stereo
- Turn on ignition and wait for radio to start coming through speakers
- Now the remote should work
Finally....I really hope this guide is helpful to someone. If it saves someone else getting as muddled as I was at one point then it has has been worth my time writing up these notes.
